Clubs that Care

St Joseph’s Football & Netball Club is an accredited ‘Clubs That Care’ sporting club.

Our role as a Wellbeing Team

When “I” is replaced with “we”, illness becomes wellness.

Mental illness is common, with current statistics indicating that one in five Victorians are suffering from mental health issues.

Evidence based research notes early intervention as key in a person’s mental health challenges.  Research also reflects the correlation between healthy relationships/community connection and wellbeing.

So essentially our role, as a Wellbeing Team, is to be a catalyst within our club to listen, to normalise discussions pertaining to wellbeing, to promote inclusive language and healthy behaviours, to disseminate educational material and updated referral information and to be a “sounding board” for anyone that has concerns with their own or someone’s health and wellbeing.

We are not acting in a professional capacity but as volunteers, here to listen and support.

We can offer referral contacts if appropriate or requested.

We take concerns very seriously and all conversations are fully confidential.  The only exceptions to this confidentiality are:

  • Disclosure/evidence of physical, sexual or serious emotional abuse.
  • Suicide is threatened or attempted.
  • Disclosure/evidence of serious self-harm, including drug and alcohol misuse/abuse.

What we do:

  • We meet every month to discuss and formulate club policies pertaining to wellbeing.  We have developed several policies including Drug, Alcohol, Child Safety Standards and Cyber Safety.
  • Record all Working With Children Checks for all new coaches and team managers.
  • We have developed a “Code of Conduct” to be adhered to by everyone involved at the Club.
  • Support our Club’s involvement in relevant initiatives related to Health and Wellbeing Programs.
  • Use our social media platform to promote and raise awareness of wellbeing, sharing appropriate research and educational opportunities.
  • Organise Thursday night raffles to further build a sense of connection and fun.
  • Promote awareness and quick reference guides through appropriate signage around the club.
  • Engage in funding initiatives and opportunities.

In our fast paced world, where change is happening at a greater rate than ever before in the history of humankind, many people are feeling isolated and disconnected. A problem shared is a problem halved!

Our primary aim is to promote and maintain a healthy, supporting and welcoming environment where every individual involved in our Club, feels like they belong.

The wellbeing of the each individual member of our club is the responsibility of all members of our club.

So please talk to us if you have any concerns or if you are worried about the wellbeing of someone else.
