You’ll recall that COGG and appointed consultants are preparing a master plan for Drew Reserve. The master plan will detail the plan to deliver the long term facility needs for our club, and also for St Peters CC.
It’s all very exciting and obviously very important for our Club over the long-term. We probably one chance at this every 20-30 years!
The master plan is expected to be finished in May. Jointly with SPCC, we have advised CoGG and the consultants of the following:
- Future proofing eg provide for growth in areas such as participation, commercial revenues and facilities, ability to encourage inclusion and increased participation for females across all three sports and at all levels
- Vastly improved drainage
- Contemporary change rooms, training facilities, arenas and lighting which meet the independent criteria for impaired and able-bodied competitors and umpires of both sexes
- Contemporary and fit-for-purpose amenities for each sporting section inclusive of administration, storage (eg merchandise, equipment), officials (eg umpires, scorers, timekeepers, coaches boxes, interchange), scoreboards
- Increased engagement and experience levels eg improved car parking, spectator seating and viewing
- Increase commercial functionality eg F&B options, function rooms, kiosks, cafes, external hire
- Greater community use eg schools, community groups
- Beautification of the reserve, and increased safety
Over the next few months we will be working to make sure we end up with what we need. The team handling this is Fiona Threlfall, Andrew Kelly, Michael Birthisel, Todd Devine and myself.
St Joseph’s Football & Netball Club cares about its members and their welfare.
In recent times, there has been growing concerns about illegal drug use in the broader community. We want to make sure this does not impact or infiltrate our club.
We have joined forces with many other clubs, including GFL clubs Lara, Grovedale, St Mary’s and Leisure Networks to get on the ”front foot”:
- To establish a Wellbeing Team, who will be your “go to” if you have concerns. We expect to be able to announce the Wellbeing Team in a matter of days.
- To train our Wellbeing Team around referring people to Alcohol and Drug agencies
- Provide support to those we have concerns about, and
- To develop Illegal Drug Policy and Procedures, which will include club sanctions around drug use
Leisure Networks as your Regional Sports Assembly has worked with the Barwon Child Youth and Family and the Australian Drug Foundation to develop the Clubs That Care program, to support clubs to combat illegal drugs and to assist people in the most appropriate ways.
This program has the unanimous support of the Club’s Committee, and the Committee feels very strongly about the effective implementation of the program at our club.

Training details for U14s, U16s and Girls football for Term 1 as follows:…
Training will start on Monday 13th February at Zampatti Oval, SJC. Training times will be Monday and Wednesdays from 4.30pm-6.00pm. These are different days from what was previously advised but have been chosen so as to minimise conflicts with the boys other sporting commitments.
Training will commence on Monday 6th February at 4.15pm at Carey Oval, SJC. Training times will be Mondays and Wednesdays from 4.15pm-5.30pm.
Training starts tomorrow night at 5pm at Zampatti Oval. Training will be on Wednesday nights from 5pm-6.15pm.
In Term 2, training for all 3 groups will switch to St Joeys Football Club grounds.
Players will need to wear runners for early sessions and will be advised by coaches when to start bringing boots.

Next season, St Joeys will be establishing a Junior Football Academy, available to all U14s, U16s and U18s players.
The purpose of the academy will be to develop the skills of all our junior players in these age groups and obtain greater alignment with our senior teams in terms of involvement and game style.
The junior academy is an initiative of our Senior Assistant Coach/Junior Coaching Coordinator Shane Jack, who each week will be assisted …by representatives from our senior coaching panel and playing group. Sessions will be run on Tuesdays 5.30pm at Drew Reserve, commencing on 2nd March, 2017.
A small group of players from each of the three age groups will be invited to attend each session on a rotational basis, with the aim that every junior player gets to attend at least 2 sessions.
Players from all grades within U14s, U16s and U18s will be included, as it is important that all our junior footballers get the same opportunities to improve their football skills and be involved with our club.
The program is being offered as part of our normal junior football registration and there is no additional cost.

Matt and Michael return to their current coaching roles following very successful 2016 seasons, with their teams finishing runners-up and premiers respectively.
Damian takes on the Under 14As coaching role following an excellent season as our U14Ds coach and brings a wealth of football experience from a highly successful playing career in the Footscray District Football League.
In addition, we are also pleased to announce the creation of the new role of Junior Coaching Coordinator, the purpose of which is to provide support to our junior coaches and ensure we apply a consistent coaching approach across our junior and senior teams. Shane Jack, current assistant to our senior coach Heath Jamieson, has agreed to take on this role in addition to his senior duties in 2017.
Based on 2016 registrations, St Joseph’s is planning at this stage on fielding 2 Colts, 3 Under 16s and 3 Under 14s teams in 2017. In the coming months, we will be seeking an indication from our 2016 junior players as to their likelihood of playing with St Joeys again in 2017 to help with our season planning.

You’ll be aware that we had made an application to COGG for funding to build The Wedge.
Tonight, COGG approved $35,000 to fund a master plan for Drew Reserve.
The master plan will detail a plan to deliver the long term facility needs for our club.
This is good long term planning and we look forward to working with the COGG to develop this plan.
Priority is still the provision of the required female facilities.

We are currently waiting on the last and final order of apparel that will be given out at the clubrooms. I have been advised by Ghanda that due to their relocation from Torquay to Barwon Terrace in Geelong they have a back log of printing. Therefore our order will be available Thursday 16th June. I will endeavour to dispatch at the clubrooms that evening.
Future orders: Club apparel can still be ordered online, however no time will be put on how long it will take. Ghanda cannot set the printer for a few items, therefore once they have 10 items and over they will then fill the orders. Future orders will incur a shipping fee and will be sent directly to the purchasers address. Please take time to fill out details correctly.
We have had 200 plus orders of clothing ordered this year, which does not include the last order. I think the garments look fantastic around the club. We have the best colours in the league.
I would like to acknowledge Ghanda for setting the web site for us at no charge. This is a huge saving to the club which operates on the generosity of sponsors and volunteers. Overall it has run very smoothly with some minor hiccups.

St Josephs Junior Footy
Our club has made an application to Council for funding of $400,000 for the Wedge Project.
The Wedge will deliver much-needed facilities for females to reach their potential & achieve their sporting aims: Netball – AFL – Cricket.
The new building will primarily comprise change rooms and toilets for netballers, female footballers and participants of all ages with a disability, and be “wedged” between the two current football/cricket ovals and the two current netball courts. , and is summarised below.
Attached are the current designs.
The Council’s budget is due for release in May 2016. We expect to start construction at the end of the season, with the project complete for 2017.
Peter Murrihy (Kildare ward councillor) has been a champion of the project at Council, along with John Irvine (sport portfolio holder). Big thanks to Peter and John.
Also Christine Couzens (our State member) has fully supported us from Day 1. Thank you Christine.

What is the Wedge?
A new building comprising:
- change rooms and toilets for netballers, female footballers and participants of all ages with a disability
- umpires change rooms for both female and male umpires
- office and storage areas to support the participants of the female sports
- public toilets for disabled, male and female
- spectator viewing and volunteer shelter
- time keepers box to cater for both ovals
- storage for NetSetGo and Auskick participants (girls also participate in Auskick)
- storage for St Peter’s Cricket Club
- future opportunity for female cricketers change facilities
What else is there to know?
Currently there is no netball amenity of any kind at our club, as concluded in the G21 and AFL Barwon regional strategy in April 2015.
- As we know, girls of all ages from both participating clubs currently change in out-dated public toilets or in an open marquee with insufficient privacy which is set up and packed up for each game. This is also used for office and admin purposes on game days.
- Our all-abilities team will also be able to use the new facility, and the facility will provide public toilets for all 24/7 – including disabled and ambulate persons.
Our club is establishing female AFL football teams for 2016, catering for 8-12 and 13-18 years age groups
- This is a key strategic initiative for the club. Sue Cormack is doing a great job leading the charge and numbers are increasing at every training session.
- All teams for both clubs will be able to fully utilise the new facility for change rooms and toilets, and also for medical care in case of injury.

Our club has always contributed funds to infrastructure developments at Drew and Walker Ovals, and this project is no exception with the club guaranteeing a commitment of $100,000 to the Wedge project
- Total project cost is $500,000, so the club is contributing 20%.

As you know we take the health and safety of our club members very seriously. As such we are adopting a new health and safety application named CareMonkey.
CareMonkey is an innovative controlled electronic medical form for clubs, schools and other groups with a duty of care. It’s an electronic version of the paper based forms you’re always having to fill in for registrations etc. It provides you the opportunity to update medical information promptly and accurately, while providing the club with instant access to the information provided by you in an emergency.
We will be using the CareMonkey app in the best interest of all Players whilst proactively fulfilling our duty of care and risk management responsibilities.
You can use a PC, laptop, tablet or smart-phone to enter the details including:
- emergency contacts
- medical contacts
- medical checklist including asthma, allergies, seizures, diabetes
- health and ambulance insurance details
- notes and other care instructions from you
- and more…
As a Player/Parent/Guardian, after you have completed your paper or online registration, we will send you an email invitation from the CareMonkey system inviting you to enter the details (or for your child) in an electronic medical form.
By following the instructions you can create your own free CareMonkey account and control all data about yourself, child/children. The CareMonkey system stores the information on your behalf and you will be able to grant (or deny) access to your data with our club. You are also able to share this data with any other group or individual you choose (eg. your child’s grandparents, their child-minder, their school, etc).
From the club’s perspective, this information will only be accessible by the coach, team manager or authorised officials looking after your child and will be managed in accordance with the Privacy Act.

We have had several spots open up for the 2016 season. The way it works is, 50 people pay $20 per week (by organised bank transfer, or $1,040 in one hit) and receive a number between 1 – 50 each. That is your number for the whole of 2016. Every week we draw out the lucky number and the winner gets $500 transferred to them.
This is a really important fundraiser for the club, so your support is very much appreciated!

… Dan and Hodgy who used their expertise to guide a very young group of players to become a very good team, and taught them how to conduct themselves as representatives of St. Joeys and how they can get the most out of what they have.
Together they have all laid a platform of success that our boys can follow.
Finally, a special thanks to Andy Heath, the Under 16’s coordinator who oversaw the year. His attention to detail ensured that all three teams represented our sporting club with distinction. Andy’s ability to grasp the big picture and break it down into achievable tasks ensured that each week we performed at our optimal level.
Congratulations to everyone involved. We had a wonderful conclusion to the year and look forward to seeing everyone back next year.

Training will commence at 4.15pm on Wednesday 4th Feb at Carey Oval. Training should conclude at 5.30pm. We hope to see as many of the players as possible at training however we do understand that at this time of the year, many of the players have other commitments.
We are happy to announce that Russell Scott has been appointed coach of the under 14 A’s team. Training will commence at 4.15pm on Tuesday 10th Feb at Carey Oval however this may change due to the availability of this oval. Any changes will be published on this website. Any parent help at training would be greatly appreciated.
This year AFL Barwon has introduced a new way of registering players. Parents have the opportunity to register players online. All football club members (any player who was registered last year) will receive an email early next week that will take you to the online registration form.
Alternatively parents and players can choose to attend our combined Little League, Junior Football and Junior Netball Registration Day on SUNDAY 22ND FEB at Drew Reserve from 10.00 – 3.00pm. Apparel will also be able to be ordered on this day. This option may be easier for families.
Over the last 3 months the team has done a power of work bringing in the recruits
required to go from Preliminary finalists to Premiers, as well as training and guiding
the players through the pre-season.
With this in mind, rather than putting our hand out for money, we have found an
innovative way to raise some whilst also having a bit of fun.
Nick Maxwell is running and launching Joey’s Powerball from the first week in
Each entrant pays $20 per week for the year (52 weeks) and in turn receives a number
from 1 to 50 that is their number for the year.
Every week there is a Powerball draw and 1 winner takes home $500 cash. There is no
limit to how many times you can win – it’s the luck of the draw.
All in all, this will help the club raise over $20,000.
All entrants will be set up with wire transfers to an account each week so we do not
have to chase people for their money (as you would imagine this would be very

Breaking News – We have recently been successful in obtaining a grant from the City which will allow us to provide additional shelters at our new netball courts. The SJFNC would again like to acknowledge the great support we receive from our ward councillor, Stretch Kontelj and the City of Greater Geelong.
Paul West Joins Baveras Brasserie
We are excited to announce that Paul West, local legend, formerly the face of the Gold Diggers Arms, has now joined the team at Baveras Brasserie, as restaurant manager.
The Club has recently received advice that we have been successful in our submissions for grant funds, to install a Safety Net behind the goals at the cemetery end of Drew Reserve.
Submissions to both AFL Barwon and Geelong Connected Communities were made and both have seen fit to offer $5,000 towards our project.
This will allow us to address a significant safety issue as well as assist with football training activities.
